Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
