Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
