Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
