Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
