Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
