Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
