Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
