Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
