Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
