Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
