Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
