Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
