Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
