Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
