Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
