Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
