Master Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Past of Craps
Be smart, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
