Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
