Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
