Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
