Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
