Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
