Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
