Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
