Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
