Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
