Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
