The History of Craps

[ English ]

The background of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game called Hazard, which goes back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in 1813. Hazard is thought to be a byproduct of Azzahr, meaning ‘the die’ a game enjoyed by Arabs.

The game evolved as it traveled from the Arab countries to France and then England. By the early 1700s, formal game rules for Hazard had been developed. France started playing the British version of Hazard and is assumed to have been brought to the us by early French colonizers. In the mid-1700s, when the British defeated the French in British North America, the French colonizers relocated to Louisiana. Dice were enjoyed on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a streamlined ‘American’ version of Craps was created. The game headed west and is a favored game that is participated in all over the United States and throughout the world.

The name ‘Craps’ is considered to be a French expression of the word crabs, which refers to a pair of ones. There are two general varieties of Craps that are gambled on-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, aptly called because it’s bet on the streets is where a tosser sets a point and then attempts to roll that point. The wagering is made either for or opposed to the tosser and another person has to cover the bet for the game of craps to continue.

In casino Craps, which is the common game, wagered on in casinos, the betting house funds the casino game. The participants play with the casino-the house covers all of the wagers of all of the players. Craps used to be a very well-liked game but in the past 20 years had split itself and other games, such as poker and chemin de fer became even more well-loved. However, Craps is experiencing a come back in fame once again in web casinos and in real world casinos.
