The Communication Process: The Relationships.

All human relations are based on communication. Communication is the foundation and support of every interaction between individuals as either a family member or friend, romantic partner, co-worker, even a casual acquaintance. Communication does not just take place through the sound of words. It takes in the tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, timing, the listening behavior, presence of emotions and even silence. As the result of communication, individuals communicate thoughts, express feelings, negotiate boundaries and establish understanding. Relationships are likely to remain safe, encouraging and meaningful when there is healthy communication. Even good relationships are strained or unclear, and therefore, where communication becomes strained or unclear, even a strong relationship progressively declines.

Communication is used by human beings as a medium between the inner world and the outer world. No one can get a direct look at what the other person thinks, fears, hopes, or what emotions they are going through. Communication enables people to put in to perspective what they feel within themselves into a shareable aspect. When somebody is describing their feelings, they provide people with the opportunity to see the inner world. When another individual listens attentively and empathically, he/she recognizes that experience as valid. With time, this swap creates emotional attachment. In the absence of communication, individuals will still be confined in their respective experiences despite their proximity to each other.

Communication quality is much more significant than the amount of communication. Individuals might communicate daily and get even more distant when dialogues are recorded and superficial or busy and hasty. Openness and honesty together with desire to be emotionally present will require meaningful communication. It takes guts to tell about personal fears, disappointments and insecurity. Trust is ensuing when there is understanding as opposed to judgment that surrounds vulnerability. There is no sudden appearance of trust. It is built up in numerous little instances of respectful communication.

Listening is also one of the most effective yet neglected processes of communication. Most individuals are so obsessed with saying what they want to say but they put less effort on listening to others. Active listening does not focus on a response, it is rather about giving complete attention, keeping of focus and making efforts to understand. When individuals listen to one another, they feel appreciated. Emotional attachment is enhanced when an individual feels appreciated. Constant listening gradually creates a feeling of security whereby people feel free to speak without intimidation.

Miscommunication occurs due to the fact that human beings understand messages based on their individual experience, beliefs and emotional states. Different people might have different meanings to the same words. The tone of voice, the facial expression and timing are some of the factors that determine the reception of a message. Even a mere statement can be supportive in one situation, but critical in another. When one is made aware of these differences people start to approach conversations more patiently and with curiosity rather than being instantly defensive.

People communicate greatly based on their emotions. People are relaxed when they are calm and can talk better and listen better. Communication can be reactive when they are angry, hurt, are anxious, or stressed. Words may be sharper. Listening may decrease. The regulation of emotions has a significant influence in relationships health. By learning to stop, take a breather and sit before responding, one will create less unnecessary conflict and will avoid words that one might regret saying later.
