Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
