Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
