Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
