Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
