Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
