Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
