Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
