Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
