Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
