Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
