Learn to Play Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Past of Craps
Be brilliant, play clever, and pickup craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
