Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
