Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
