Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
